Turnstone Systems announced today that ConnectSouth Communications, Inc., has selected Turnstone's Copper CrossConnect CX100 as the local loop management platform for its digital subscriber line (DSL) services. ConnectSouth will implement the Turnstone solution in carrier central offices to save time and money in introducing DSL services to businesses in about 80 southern U.S. cities. "The availability of cost-effective, 'always-on' Internet services is overdue in most of the markets ConnectSouth has targeted for deployment," said Jeff Mucci, ConnectSouth Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect considerable customer demand from the start, and Turnstone's Copper CrossConnect will be an important tool for helping us meet that demand rapidly and cost-effectively." The Copper CrossConnect CX100 limits the number of truck rolls required to deploy, manage and maintain DSL services. With the Turnstone solution implemented in carrier central offices, ConnectSouth will be able to determine remotely and in advance whether a link to a customer premise is capable of supporting a particular type of DSL service (such as IDSL, SDSL or ADSL). Technicians will be able to perform basic metallic testing, various DSL-specific tests and spectral analysis -- both toward the customer premise and back toward the access equipment -- from an independent test point in the local loop. Also, ConnectSouth technicians will be able to generate audible tones to aid installation and crossconnect subscriber loops to different DSL equipment ports. The Copper CrossConnect CX100 also is designed to help ensure maximum service availability. The Turnstone solution provides line-side protection switching for ConnectSouth's DSL equipment. Additionally, ConnectSouth will leverage Turnstone's CrossWorks Back Office Automation Software to enable loop management from a centralized location. The CrossWorks platform works in conjunction with CrossConnect CX100 platforms in central offices to provide spectral analysis, automated loop testing and storage of results, network-wide configuration changes and many other management functions. CrossWorks can be accessed through a Web-based graphical user interface, an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) interface or through standard Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), such as CORBA, JAVA RMI or DCOM. This flexibility enables ConnectSouth to readily integrate loop management functions with order entry, order management, provisioning and fault management functions in its Operational Support System, as well as streamline operational processes for field technicians. "Time to market is one of the most critical competitive differentiators among DSL service providers, and our Copper CrossConnect and CrossWorks solutions position ConnectSouth to stand out from its competition in this area," said Eric Andrews, vice president of marketing with Turnstone. "ConnectSouth will also realize operational cost benefits because our solutions limit the amount of manual labor required to deliver DSL." About ConnectSouth ConnectSouth Communications, Inc.
